Atlas has today handed over its latest capital project to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
The new discharge lounge, designed and delivered by Atlas’ Capital and Property Team, is the latest in a series of projects Atlas has implemented for Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The discharge lounge project was completed ahead of schedule and involved a complete remodelling of Blackpool Victoria Hospital’s X-ray North department, delivering a safe, spacious and soothing environment for patients waiting to be discharged from hospital.
Victoria Drake, Clinical Matron from Blackpool Victoria Hospital, said: “The Discharge Lounge performs a very important part of the patient’s journey – it is where our dedicated team provide a safe, high level of care, as patients prepare to go home at the end of their stay, providing dignity and privacy.
“The discharge lounge will help bridge the gap between acute admissions and their return to the community. We now have more space, better facilities and the new location will make it much easier for patients to get ready to make their journey home.”
Friends and relatives of the patient will be advised to collect them from the new discharge lounge on the ground floor, rather than the ward they are based on – making patient collection easier and quicker.
Atlas’ Capital Developments Project Manager, Keri Graham said: “It is great to see the new facility ready to help patients on their journey home after their stay at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. The design and décor has achieved a light spacious environment, where patients can wait in a comfortable and relaxed environment, until they are able to be discharged.”
Pat Oliver, Director of Operations at the Trust, said: “Atlas has delivered a big improvement for us, as we are now able to move patients as soon as they are ready, on their day of discharge – rather than keeping them in hospital longer than they need to be.
“We are also able to free up beds and wards earlier, further improving the patient’s journey during their time in hospital.”
It is expected that the discharge lounge will be utilised by adult patients being discharged from hospital – at least 20 people per day.
Atlas’ Head of Capital and Property, Craig Harris, said: “It fills me with pride to know that our team has provided Blackpool Victoria Hospital with a much-improved environment for their patients waiting to be discharged after their stay.”
The discharge lounge consists of a reception area, nurse base, a large waiting area for patients, with brand new amenities including a television, magazines, hot and cold drinks together with healthy snacks sandwiches.
