Recently qualified apprentices
share their experience
At Atlas, we think it’s really important to plan for the future, by investing in young people wanting to learn. We pride ourselves on bringing talent into the healthcare industry through Apprenticeships and shaping them to become part of our future. Recently we spoke with two of our not-so-new Apprentices, Charlie (left) and Tom (right).
Charlie and Tom joined us as Electrical Installations & Maintenance and Mechanical Engineering apprentices and three years on, they’re fully qualified. Taking on an apprenticeship with us gave them the guidance and support they needed to develop in their roles and as people. Both Tom and Charlie stated that the level of responsibility they took on by visiting our clients around the North West at hospitals, clinics and health centres and completing jobs really improved their people, communication and confidence skills.
A highlight they both shared was the chance to work with contractors on a short-term loan. Tom was able to focus on the electrical installation side of his role, where typically a lot of the work needed is maintenance based. Charlie installed air handling units on a catering roof which is something you don’t get to do every day in this industry, offering them more key progression in their roles.
Their line Managers had plenty to praise about too, stating that ‘We’re so proud of how far these lads have come, they’re a real asset to our team and are just a joy to work with every day. They've taken on every piece of advice and you can see that in the quality of work they show. It's great to see that they want to continue working for Atlas and for these guys, the sky really is the limit.’
Learning the trades of Electrical installation & Maintenance and Mechanical Engineering wasn't all plain sailing though- COVID being a hard hitter. With their coursework delayed indefinitely at the time, it was a surreal experience working at the frontline of the Heath industry throughout the pandemic, but it certainly opened their eyes to the importance of their roles.
The Apprenticeships are completed but it doesn’t stop there, as well as becoming full-time members of staff, Charlie recently took on a leadership course to progress his skills even further, one of the internal courses we offer to staff to progress their learning.
